From 7th grade through Algebra II — personalized, in-person tutoring that meets your student right where they are. I'll come to you.
B.S. Mathematics & M.Ed.
4 Years Teaching Experience
Hi! I'm Abby Owen, a Johnson City native with a deep love for mathematics and an even deeper love for helping students finally feel confident in it. I earned my undergraduate degree in Mathematics and a Master's in Education, and spent four years in the classroom before deciding I wanted to make tutoring my full focus.
I believe every student has the ability to succeed in math — they just need someone willing to explain it a different way. I come to your home, school, or we can meet at the Johnson City Public Library — so there's zero stress about commuting. Small group tutoring is a fantastic way to make learning social and affordable.
Most tutoring jumps straight into homework help. Mine starts with understanding why your student is struggling in the first place.
Before we dive into content, I conduct an initial diagnostic evaluation — a relaxed, conversational assessment and a short content-based assessment that together reveal exactly where the gaps in understanding live. Is it a foundational concept from two years ago? A specific type of problem that never quite landed? A test-taking pattern that's costing points?
I also look closely at how each student organizes their work and their notes. If their teacher has a system, great — we build on it. If the student already has an approach that works for them, great too. But if not, I'll help them build one. Keeping up with class notes is non-negotiable, and I take that seriously.
My approach is about more than just helping students get through tonight's homework. It's about creating independence. The goal is always to add to and reinforce what they're already doing in class — not replace it — so that over time, they need me less and less.
With my background in both mathematics and education, I can pinpoint those high-impact friction points quickly — then build every session around resolving them. No guessing, no wasted time, just targeted work that produces real results.
A student struggling in Algebra II might actually be missing a pre-algebra concept from 6th grade. Without a diagnostic lens, you can tutor for months and never touch the real problem. I find the root — then fix it.
A guided assessment — not a test — that reveals how your student thinks through problems and where understanding breaks down.
I identify the specific concepts and skill gaps that are creating the most friction — tracing issues back to their true origin.
Every session is curated around those high-impact areas. No filler, no busywork — just the work that moves the needle.
As gaps close, I re-evaluate and adapt the plan. Your student's sessions evolve as they grow — always focused on what matters most.
Specializing in the critical middle school and high school years where math starts to feel overwhelming — and where the right support makes all the difference.
Whether you prefer one-on-one attention or the energy of a small group, I have a format that fits your student's learning style and your family's budget.
I come directly to your home or school — no commuting required. We can also meet at the Johnson City Public Library. Fully focused, individualized sessions tailored to your student's exact needs.
2–6 students learning together — a collaborative, affordable format that builds confidence and makes math social. Perfect for classmates or neighbors! We can meet at your home, school, or the Johnson City Public Library.
No hidden fees or registration costs. You're only paying for quality instruction. Group sessions are a great way to stretch your tutoring dollar while keeping learning fun.

My daughter went from a D to a B+ in Algebra I in just six weeks. Abby has such a gift for explaining things in a way that finally sticks. She's patient, encouraging, and truly cares about her students.
The group sessions with Abby are the highlight of our week. My son and two of his friends all improved their grades, and they actually have fun while doing it. Best money we've spent.
I was dreading Algebra II. After working with Abby all semester, I ended up with the highest score in my class on the final. She explains everything step-by-step and never makes you feel dumb for asking.
